Canada Day 4 - Lake Louise to Drumheller

Today was mostly a travel day, which took us from the Banff/Jasper mountains to the badlands of Alberta.

We started our drive north out of Lake Louise along the Icefields Parkway. The parkway runs through a valley between mountains and starts in Banff National Park and then goes into Jasper National Park. The road is called Icefields Parkways since you can see glacier after glacier as you drive. We made several stops at scenic views including Peyto Lake, another glacial lake like Moraine and Louise. Not sure we would ever tire of views of these mountain lakes and it was tempting to keep heading north.

We then turned east and headed out of the mountains. Stopping for lunch at an unlikely spot that had great food. The Miner’s Cafe. Here we said farewell to the mountains.

The high, rocky mountains quickly gave way to low, forest covered hills, and just as quickly turned into farm land much like the US midwest, mainly growing grains. Then finally, the land turned into badlands, with coolees everywhere. It was quite amazing within about a 5 hour drive to go through so many different landscapes.  We wish we had gotten a better photo of the first coolees we saw. We hope to learn more about the geology of this area at the dinosaur museum tomorrow.

We finally arrived at Drumheller, our home for the next 2 days. Drumheller is known for dinosaurs and the Royal Tyrell Museum. Our B&B host said you can’t dig a hole in Drumheller without finding a dinosaur fossil. A bit like Europe and finding random Roman ruins.

Sushi for dinner, ice cream (at a creamery owned by our B&B host) and seeing the world’s biggest dinosaur rounded out our evening. Drumheller contains an eclectic population, which based on what we saw downtown isn’t afraid to laugh at itself. Dinosaurs are EVERYWHERE.

The world’s biggest dinosaur.
You can climb up and view the world through her teeth.
